Surgical Abortions Allowed in Springfield

According to the State Journal-Register, Springfield's Planned Parenthood clinic at 601 Bruns Lane will begin performing surgical abortions Thursday.

The decision to offer outpatient procedure marks the first time traditional abortions have been offered on an elected basis in Springfield and the first time Planned Parenthood has performed surgical abortions outside the Chicago area, where the organization is based.

The Springfield Planned Parenthood has offered "medical abortions" since 2010.

Medical abortion is a way to end a pregnancy with medication over a span of time, and is only available during early pregnancy.

Surgical abortion is when a doctor removes a pregnancy from the uterus. It has been legal in the U.S. since 1973 and has a very low risk of injury or infection when done properly.

They will be offered every Thursday at the clinic.

Planned Parenthood has increased security at its Springfield location, acknowledging that the initation of surgical abortions may attract extra protests outside its clinic.
